JUST WHERE ON EARTH HAVE I BEEN?!
Well, the wedding is over, the honeymoon was wonderful, and now it’s back to earth with a bang and getting back to *real* life. You know, icky things like work, and cleaning the house, and paying the bills. Meh. But actually, it’s really not so bad, we’ve got lots of great stuff on the horizon to keep us entertained, like the bathroom renovation which we have made a start on at long last!
But this post isn’t about what’s next, it’s about what has happened over the last couple of months, and why it’s all been a bit quiet on the blog front. It was all pretty crazy. Sooo many photos to share, but I’ll just tease you with a few in this post because I’m mean like that!
Wedding Prep and Paris Hen
A fortnight before the wedding, we decamped with dogs in tow to my parents’ house in Somerset, to help get the garden ready and do all our last minute stuff, like building arbours and making flower girl dresses! (More on that craziness soon). Then the start of the wedding week I had a mini-hen trip with my best friend to Paris – 36 hours of Parisian wonderfulness that was absolutely the perfect opportunity to catch up. I’ll post what we got up to soon, but here’s a sneak peek:
The Big Day!
Then of course, the big event! Our wedding! I will tell you all about it when I do a post with all the professional photos (soon, I promise), but for now, here are a couple of my favourite snaps of the day taken by me or friends or my lovely brother in law Chris, who is a bit nifty with the camera. We did a small civil ceremony in the morning, and then had a big wedding at home with all the family and friends, hence the two dresses, but I confess, I changed into the smaller one in the evening for dancing purposes! Commence wedding spam:
It was truly a wonderful day. More details soon, but suffice to say, I am still reeling with the loveliness of it all, and how many amazing friends and family contributed in a big way to making it so special.
We then had a few days afterwards which were absolutely fantastic. We stayed in the most gorgeous village pub-with-rooms nearby the night of the wedding and the following day, so after a full day of tidying, we headed back to the pub for an incredible evening meal with the Best Man and his wife, and a relaxing breakfast the next day with the papers.
A busy day dismantling the marquee with my cousins the next day (they have a marquee company which we used – Taddle Farm Tents. Recommend them for any West Country weddings!) before a stroll with the dogs on Ham Hill, a local country park, and a pub supper with lovely views down over the village.
More tidying the next day, and returning casks to the wonderful local place we got our cider – Perry’s Cider Mills. We took Mum and Dad and had a Ploughmans lunch in the sunshine in their beautiful garden, before perusing the shop and having a wander around the museum. If you’re ever in this bit of Somerset (it’s in Dowlish Wake near Ilminster) I highly recommend a visit, and the Nustar farmhouse cider.
That afternoon Ste and I did some much-needed relaxing and sunbathing and had a dip in the pool. Our first afternoon just the two of us as newlyweds! (And Poppy the lifeguard!).
Back to Real Life
The following day we had to return to Yorkshire, leaving the dogs behind for an extended summer holiday. The journey took 9 hours and we arrived home totally shattered and really not ready to go back to work or normal life the next day. The rest of that week and the next were a bit of a struggle if I am honest. I had a couple of huge freelance projects to finish as well as a very busy time at work, and it all got a bit stressful, but we coped knowing our honeymoon was on the horizon.
And the following weekend I finished all my work just in time to catch our flight to Nice, where we picked up our hire car and drove to Mandelieu La Napoule, the small town just along the beach from Cannes, where we were stayed in a friend’s apartment for the week. We were planning on doing very little other than lounging by the pool or lying on the beach, but we actually managed a very action packed week and still got in plenty of relaxing too.
Our first full day was my 35th birthday too, which I was a little nervous about (it seems so much older than I feel!) but being away on honeymoon, spending the day in the glitz and glamour of Cannes, and even fitting in some vintage shopping at the Marche Forville, meant it wasn’t at all the ordeal I was expecting.
As well as a day in Cannes, we spent a day in Nice, a day driving round the hilltop towns of Grasse and St Paul de Vence in the mountains, went on a boat trip to Ile Sainte-Marguerite, drove to Monaco and round the Grand Prix route, hopped over the border to Ventimiglia in Italy for some cheese and gelato, visited a gorgeous vineyard for a tour and tasting and a Michelin-starred lunch, and got out and did some hiking in a national park up a little mountain with a picnic (which of course included rose wine!).
We visited so many beautiful places that one post on all of it just won’t cut it, I’ll have to do lots, but for now, here are some of our photo highlights.
So, that’s what I’ve been up to. Apologies for the interruption in usual service (who am I kidding?! My posting schedule has been, er, sporadic lately, I’m working on a regular schedule), but as you can see, life was pretty busy! But now we really are back to everyday life, and it’s on with the renovation. Here comes the dust!
