I am delighted to finally announce the safe arrival of our beautiful little daughter, Emilia Jennifer, on 19th July at 2.36pm, at 42 weeks exactly. As expected, she was a little bit of a chunky monkey, weighing 10lbs 6oz!
She has very dark brown hair, though her eyebrows seem to be blonde so we are wondering whether she might lose the dark hair and go blonde, and her eyes are blue-grey, though these can change too (did you know most babies are born with blue eyes? I didn’t!). I am not sure whether she looks more like Ste or me, she definitely got my bobbly chin the poor little thing, but I think she carries it off far better than me. She is absolutely beautiful, so perfect, I can’t believe we created her!
The last you heard from me I was agonising over my birth plan, upset that the natural labour I wanted had been taken away and I was heading for an elective caesarean. Well, turns out that Emilia had her own ideas and my new birth plan went out of the window too! Goes to show that it is all a bit pointless to “plan” really. I was due to go in for the operation on Wednesday morning, but at midnight on Tuesday my waters broke!
I will write her birth story soon, but in short, we ended up having the planned c-section after 12 hours of syntocin-induced labour. The moment that Ste told me we had a daughter was so wonderful (I secretly wanted a little girl, but you can’t say that can you?!), and when they placed her on my chest, in a little knitted pink hat that barely went on her head she was so big, I thought my heart would burst! And it’s been threatening to burst multiple times a day ever since then!
We came home on the fifth day, and since then things have been a complete rollercoaster. We’ve had nights with great sleep and days when we’ve been out for lunch and managed to breastfeed in public, which have felt like we’re winning at parenting, and we’ve had nights with no sleep when she won’t settle at all where we feel like we are totally clueless and doing everything wrong. I guess that’s just how it goes though!
Today she is already 4 weeks’ old, and I cannot believe how quickly this first month has flown past, and yet at the same time it feels like we never didn’t have her! We are so in love, and she’s growing and changing every day, it’s amazing.
Finding time to blog is tricky – at the moment she’s not keen on going down to sleep during the day, though she’s good at it in the night thankfully – so please bear with me for more posts on our kitchen etc and more on Emilia and our birth story! I also plan to write up a third trimester post, because I think it was probably the one which held the most surprises for me and I’d like to share them.
In the meantime, you can see our daily adventures over on Instagram.
