This time last year I was having a tricky time drafting my post of goals for 2017 – I was three months’ pregnant but we weren’t ready to announce it to the world at that point, so it was difficult to write without making growing and giving birth to our baby my biggest priority of the year! And of course, that has been the most amazing thing that has happened this year, and I could write about it for hours (and probably will do over the coming months), but this post is about reviewing my goals, so the focus is a bit different. But first a few highlights from the year, with plenty of baby pics!
Now, onto my goals, which were:
- Manage my time more effectively
- Blog regularly on Mondays and Thursdays
- Complete the kitchen-diner extension (the biggie)
My main goal to get on with the building work for a new kitchen despite not having finished a lot upstairs probably seemed a bit bizarre without the knowledge that we needed to do it before our little person arrived to avoid filling the house with dust with a baby around! And we met this goal, albeit rather up to the wire as the builders we wanted couldn’t start until May, giving me a couple of rather stressful final months of my pregnancy! It was all worth it however, as the new kitchen is an amazing family space, even slightly unfinished as it is.
And that basically sums up my 2017 – being pregnant while living through a huge building project, and then from July onwards, learning to be Mummy to our beautiful daughter Emilia. I didn’t really get much else done, I found all three trimesters of pregnancy pretty tough and it seriously impacted my productivity, though I did manage to do quite a bit of freelance in preparation for the scarce times of maternity pay. Since having Emilia however, I’ve been in a wonderful baby bubble and have prioritised spending time with her. I did manage one freelance job when Emilia was four months’ old which I did in (rare) naptimes, evenings and weekends when Ste could look after her. It was very stressful as it was a new type of work and had a tight deadline, and I was at the mercy of Emilia sleeping, but I also really enjoyed working again, which bodes well for going back to work after Easter this year, which I am slightly dreading in terms of how to balance everything.
2017 also saw us do a few things around the house other than the kitchen and almost finishing the bathroom, and we managed to go on a couple of holidays, to Galway in February, and then on our dream babymoon to Santorini in May, as well as various weekends away for weddings and to visit family and friends. So I suppose I managed goal no 1 that I set for myself for the year, of managing my time effectively, which I am quite proud of especially given that I spent a considerable part of 2017 napping!
My second goal was regular blogging, which no doubt you will realise I failed miserably at, again! One day I’ll crack it maybe. For now, I think aiming for two posts a month is realistic, rather than weekly, so let’s see if I can manage that, and then maybe in 2019 I’ll up my frequency.
So, pretty successful on the goals really, both those in my post and our secret baby goal, other than regular blogging, but I think you can forgive me, right?!
Back soon with my goals for 2018 – let’s just say they mainly involve finishing what I’ve started!
